Professor Harding's current scholarship and engagement activities revolve around the development and application of American National and ISO standards dealing with Technical Product Documentation (TPD) as it broadly relates to manufacturing design and other technical aspects of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM). In turn, this expertise is woven back into his classroom instruction and research in standardization practices and process.

• These activities span the spectrum of standardization from standards concerning the operation, conformance and interoperability among 3D CAD systems, to those concerning the interpretation of manufacturing intent expressed in specifications such as geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and metrology. He has been involved with technical standards for nearly three decades; as an industrial practitioner with Westinghouse, Olin Mathieson and IBM, and as a professor, consultant and industrial trainer. He has authored or edited over 80 technical publications on PLM and related topics in the U.S. and abroad. Among these are the dimensioning & tolerancing, and surface finish sections of the 26th, 27th editions of Machinery's Handbook, plus those and additional topics in the 28th edition.
  
  
• For over the last decade he has been active on a number of American National standards writing committees and chairs the ANSI/ASME standards committees for graphic symbology, and screw thread representation. He also chairs the U.S. Technical Activities Group to ISO/TC 10 (U.S. TAG), the committee of US technical experts to ISO Technical Committee 10 (Technical Product Documentation).
  
  
• He is active on a number of US standards writing committees, including engineering drawing paper, dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), 3D digital product modeling and the ASME Y14 main committee overseeing all US standards for engineering drawings and related documentation practices. Harding also serves at the societal level as ASME vice-president-elect for Standardization and Testing and chair-elect of the ASME Board on Standardization and Testing which manages and supervises the main committees developing standards for fasteners, geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, metrology, hand tools, machine tools, pallets, surface quality, threads, gaging, plumbing fixtures, metal mill products, chemical pumps, instrumentation, performance test codes and others.
  
  
• For the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), Harding is a member of The Institute's national Board of Directors and also serves as chair of the ANSI Committee on Education (CoE), the committee which oversees all Institute initiatives related to standards and conformity assessment education and outreach. The goal being to fulfill the objectives of the United States Standards Strategy (USSS). He additionally serves on the ANSI national advisory panel on personnel certification accreditation. Internationally, beginning in 1998, Harding has served as the Head of Delegation (HoD) for U.S. technical experts representing ANSI to meetings of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 10 (ISO/TC 10), Technical Product Documentation, held at various venues in North America, Asia, Oceania, and Europe.
  
  In 2000 he was elected to his current position as chair of ISO/TC 10, the 62-country Technical Committee with the Secretariat based in Sweden. The TC develops and maintains 130 worldwide standards for technical product documentation for PLM, including engineering drawings, graphics symbology, 3D CAD modeling, and related tools and practices. Within ISO/TC 10, he additionally serves as a U.S. technical expert on ISO/TC 10/WG 16, the committee which developed ISO 16792:2006, the seminal international standard for 3D CAD operation, and on ISO/TC 10/SC 10, the committee writing worldwide technical graphic symbology standards. He also has served on an ad hoc ISO coordinating committee, with other TC experts and ISO central secretariat staff in Geneva. The committee defined internal specifications for technical graphics use in all ISO standards. he has participated in overseas meetings in Beijing, London, Tokyo, Sydney, Stockholm, Berlin, Milan, Oslo, Zurich and Geneva, visiting some locales multiple times. During the 2007-08 academic year he participated in or chaired, meetings in Geneva and Zurich. During the 2008-09 academic year he chaired meetings in Japan. During the 2009-10 academic year he will travel to ISO meetings in the US and Sweden.
  
  
• As a subject matter expert at Purdue, Professor Harding has led funded research on PLM topics and has provided consulting and training services for a number of companies including, Alcoa, Wabash National, Federal Mogul, Bosch, Stanley, Allied Signal, Miles, Sabin, Caterpillar, Cummins, Excel, Bayer, Sealed Power, Exide, Nyloncraft, AM General, TRW, Adapto, Eaton, Johnson Controls, IBM, Medventure, British Columbia Ferry Co., LTD, Hendrickson Suspensions, Uderseas Sensor Systems, Inc. and many others. At the U.S. federal level, he has been certified by the U.S. Government Services Administration (GSA) as a subject matter expert on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and has provided expert commentary in state, national and international judicial arenas. He is a biographee in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering and Who's Who in American Education.
