Advances in information systems and data communications, particularly the Internet, have provided the technical foundation for the explosive growth of the e-Business phenomenon. For many companies, transitioning to an "e" business model is a matter of survival. Tremendous opportunity is afforded to all companies that exploit the new technology.
The "digital enterprise" seizes the opportunity by utilizing integrated systems that allow new products and services to be developed more quickly, produced efficiently, and delivered and supported in a way that provides excellent customer satisfaction. Technology supports sharing of information and leveraging of knowledge across all functional areas of the business. Internet capabilities extend the digital enterprise for effective joint-design, partnering, and vendor relationships.
The mission of the Digital Enterprise Center is, through industry partnerships and collaborative projects, to develop an applied research laboratory where advanced technology that implements the digital enterprise concept can be demonstrated and studied.
