Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Grants - Nate Hartman

In 2005, Nate Hartman was a member of a team of College of Technology faculty that received two grants from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the National Science Foundation. The amount of funding is nearly $1.75M and will support these efforts through 2010. The focus of this curriculum development centers on product lifecycle management and the integration of its enabling technologies into business practices.

Nate's role in this effort focuses on 3D modeling and product data management technologies used in the product development process. One unique element of the NSF proposal is the cooperation between Purdue and four community colleges - one each in Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin - to concentrate on their respective areas of PLM.

In the Spring semester of 2005, Nate Hartman worked with a group of CGT 411 students on a project with Rolls-Royce Corporation - Indianapolis to develop a method to parametrically define airfoil profiles using knowledge management tools within UGS' NX2 CAD software. Typically the process of generating airfoil geometry from analysis data can be a tedious process that takes a great deal of time if (and when) the analysis data changes.
Chris Rahaim SoftImage Acquisition

Chris Rahaim

One of the powerful international 3d software packages recently used in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Superman Returns’ and in games such as ‘Advent Children’ has been acquired over the summer.

Dr. Rahaim whom has struck a deal with Avid Graphics to acquire enough licenses of SoftImage XSI v.5.11 Advanced to equip our labs and make SoftImage available to students to use.  He is using this powerful, yet flexible 3D software package in the CGT 241 and CGT 426 courses this semester.
