Curricula and Courses

Purdue University's Aeronautical Technology program prepares an individual to fill a gap between the aeronautical engineer and the aircraft mechanic. The aeronautical technologist has the expertise necessary to assist with the design, testing, and modification of aircraft, as well as he practical knowledge and skills required to perform aircraft maintenance. The technologist often serves as a interface between aeronautical engineers and aircraft mechanics and assemblers, and as such, must possess the ability to communicate and interact with others. A rapidly expanding technology is providing an increasing opportunity and demand for aeronautical technologists.

The Aviation Management program is designed for students who are seeking careers in air traffic control, airport management, or airline operations. Students in this curriculum study Aircraft Systems, Principles of Flight, and Basic Aircraft Science. They also take courses in Air Traffic Control, Aviation Law, Airport Management, Air Transportation and Aviation Meteorology as well as the general education requirements of the University.

Students majoring in Professional Flight Technology may pursue a two year, Associate of Science Degree and a four year, Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation Technology (BSAT). Those completing the requirements for an Associate Degree during the first two years typically continue into the follow-on, second two years. Progression into the final two years, however,is not automatic, but generally occurs as students achieve minimum academic criteria established by the faculty.

Through the associate degree program, students earn the private and commercial pilot certificates and an instrument rating. Additionally, lower division college coursework such as English, psychology, math, physics, small aircraft systems, and human factors are mandated. The focus during the final two years is on transport category aircraft and systems, high altitude atmospheric science, advanced navigation, crew resource management, with other upper division college coursework required. All Professional Flight majors receive extensive training in PurdueÕs B-727 simulators and fly as copilot on PurdueÕs Raytheon Super King Air 200 aircraft. Students also earn the multi-engine rating.
