Biography

William A. Ross is Professor of Computer Graphics Technology in the School of Technology at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Prior to joining the faculty at Purdue in 1988, he received his B.S. and M.Ed. degrees from North Carolina State University where he developed a funded, UNIX-based, applied solid modeling instructional laboratory. Since joining the faculty at Purdue, he has received the Outstanding Non-Tenured Faculty Award from the School of Technology, was elected as Chairman of the Engineering Design Graphics Division (EDGD) of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) for 1994-95, and is currently serving as Area Head for the Technical Animation & Spatial Graphics Professional Program within the Department of Computer Graphics Technology.

He is the author of four textbooks covering topics of 3D animation, computer aided design, technical sketching, and has authored than 50 technical papers and journal articles covering a variety of applied computer graphics topics. Professor Ross has also been employed by IBM, the RCA Corporation, Hewlett-Packard, Computervision, Autodesk , and the Caterpillar Corporation as a consultant for applied computer graphic training and technology integration. He has produced commercial computer animations for Caterpillar, Purdue's Black Cultural Center, and the IV2000 Information Visualization Film Festival in London, England.

Research interests include development of applied computer graphics tools for education, training, communication and testing purposes. In addition to teaching, writing, and consulting, he has chaired or served on 26 Master of Science graduate committees. Professional affiliations include SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group in Graphics of ACM), American Society for Engineering Education - Engineering Design Graphics Division, Information Visualization, and serving as Co-Trustee for the Purdue University chapter of Epsilon Pi Tau, the International Honorary Professional Fraternity for Education in Technology.
