BIOGRAPHY

Denver Lopp is an Assistant Professor of Aviation Technology at Purdue University.  He is responsible for Aviation Maintenance Inspection, Airport Management, and Aviation Law courses. He developed a Heavy Transport Maintenance course focusing on Purdue’s 727-100, and co-developed an undergraduate and graduate course in Aviation Human Factors.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

  • 1992, Assistant Professor - Purdue University - Aviation Technology Department. 
  • 1977-present, Entrepreneur in agriculture businesses. Started grain production operation, growing specified products for human and animal consumption. Created commodities brokerage firm, resulting in a main office at Lafayette, Indiana and four other branch offices in the midwest. 
  • 1974-1976, Manager Cargo Methods, Standard and Budgets, Pan American World Airways. Supervised department in developing, implementing, and coordinating a system for setting performance standards and budgets for one hundred two cargo stations worldwide. Included new concepts in budget system development, improvements in operation methods and standard measurement techniques. Resulted in large increase in cargo operational profit system wide.
  • 1973-1974, Senior Industrial Engineer - Pan American World Airways Finance Department. Coordinated with six other team members in developing a new department controlling performance standards and finance budget control for passenger service, ramp service, catering, reservations and cargo operations for world wide operations.
  • 1971-1973, Maintenance Planning Foreman - Pan American World Airways. Supervised and assigned maintenance crews in 707/727 and 747 heavy maintenance operations. Conducted special projects in manpower planning and work flow control for general manager of heavy maintenance.
  • 1971, Teacher Assistant - Purdue University Aviation Technology Maintenance Program. Conducted and developed lab exercises for aviation powerplant courses.
  • 1971, Management Training Program - Pan American World Airways.  Performed special projects in several company wide maintenance departments. Heavy concentration in Human Relations Department where I developed mechanics’ assignment policy and procedural methods.
  • 1968-1970, A&P Mechanic at Purdue University Flight Department. Performed airframe and powerplant work on single and twin engine general aviation aircraft.

UNIVERSITY RESEARCH

  • 1995 - Evaluation of Soy-Diesel Fuel Blends - Grant from Indiana Soybean Council
  • 1996 - Turbine Engine Operation Using Soybean Methyl Ester Blends - Grant from Soybean Development Council. Two year project
  • 1995-97 - Human Factors research in airline line maintenance operations, studied four major airlines.  Co-supervised students in research at domestic and international stations and presentations to airline management.
  • 1996 - Presenter - “Human Factors Research”, Midway Airport Tenants Association
  • 1996 - Co-researcher and publication of “A Study of Human Factors Involved in Communications of Aircraft  Malfunctions Between Flight, Maintenance, and Technical Support Personnel” - United Technologies grant
